PUERTO RICO’S FIRST WORLD CUP: An Island’s Historic Moment, a Celebration for the World

An extraordinary first for Puerto Rican sports—and a celebration of football, persistence, and unity through diversity.

When Puerto Rico takes the pitch in Morocco, its flag will rise, its anthem will play, and young women will step into a moment no Puerto Rican national football team has experienced before.

Somewhere on the island—or across the world—a girl watching will see that jersey and imagine wearing it herself.

That is how much a FIRST can mean.

On October 17, Puerto Rico begins its debut at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026, which runs through November 7 and features 24 teams. This is Puerto Rico’s FIRST FIFA World Cup appearance in football—women or men, at any age level. These players have made sports history before their opening whistle.

¡Wepa! A milestone worth celebrating.

For Puerto Ricans on the island and across the world, seeing their flag on this stage carries special meaning. Puerto Rico’s music, food, art, and spirit have connected people across generations and borders. Now these young women are adding their own chapter through football.

Their breakthrough belongs within a larger celebration. Every team arriving in Morocco brings talented athletes, dedicated coaches, proud communities, and ambitions worth recognizing. Copa Love celebrates Puerto Rico’s historic first while welcoming every nation taking the pitch.

How Puerto Rico Qualified for the World Cup

Puerto Rico earned its place through the Concacaf final qualifying round in Costa Rica, opening with a 3–1 victory over Haiti and a 9–0 win over Bermuda. A 4–0 defeat to the United States completed its campaign, but its earlier performances proved decisive: two victories, 12 goals scored, and a +7 goal difference secured the best runner-up berth ahead of Costa Rica.

Every goal mattered. So did the preparation, teamwork, and concentration behind it. One difficult result did not erase everything this team had built.

Pa’lante. Keep working. Trust your teammates. Make the next opportunity count.

The achievement also carries regional significance: Puerto Rico became the first Caribbean nation to reach this U17 women’s tournament through regional qualifying. Trinidad and Tobago in 2010 and the Dominican Republic in 2024 previously participated as hosts.

The Players and Coaches Behind the Breakthrough

Captain Camille Adame Lugo will help lead Puerto Rico into its first World Cup. FIFA identifies the versatile midfielder and defender as the team’s player to watch, highlighting her presence throughout qualifying. Born in Jacksonville to a Puerto Rican mother and Dominican father, she reflects the connections between families, cultures, and the countries they proudly represent.

Giselle Alaina Falcón contributed three goals across the victories over Haiti and Bermuda. Mía Colón Santiago scored in both wins, while Michaela Poidomani added the third goal against Haiti to restore Puerto Rico’s two-goal advantage. Their contributions deserve recognition alongside every teammate who helped secure qualification.

Head coach Andrés Mirabelli, together with the coaching and support staff, now prepares the squad for its World Cup debut.

The foundations extend beyond one campaign. The Puerto Rican Football Federation identifies CFU U14 titles in 2023 and 2025 and an UNCAF U16 title in 2025 as milestones in the sustained development of women’s football on the island.

This moment shows why that work matters. Young players need meaningful competition, committed coaches, and pathways that give their ambition somewhere to go.

Twenty-Four Teams on One Global Stage

Puerto Rico joins DPR Korea, Poland, and Nigeria in Group B, opening against defending champion DPR Korea on October 17. The newcomers will immediately face one of the tournament’s most accomplished teams.

Across the competition, established contenders and emerging football nations will bring different strengths, styles, and stories. Every player deserves recognition as a competitor with ambitions of her own.

We can celebrate Puerto Rico’s arrival while respecting its opponents and appreciating great football wherever it comes from. That shared respect makes the World Cup special.

Copa Love: Unity Through Diversity

We call it soccer. We call it football. We call it fútbol.

Different languages. Different cultures. A shared love for the game.

Unity through diversity is the essence of Copa Love. Football brings people together while giving every community room to express its identity. Every player and supporter deserves to feel they belong.

Former Brazil national team coach Dunga, who captained Brazil to the 1994 World Cup title, captured football’s power to connect people:

“The World Cup brings down cultural barriers.”

Speaking to FIFA, Dunga described the joy of seeing people from different religions and backgrounds come together through football—a message that reflects Copa Love’s belief in unity through diversity.

For Copa Love founder Ralph Trionfo, Puerto Rico’s breakthrough captures the purpose behind the brand community:

“Puerto Rico’s historic journey to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup captures why I created Copa Love: to celebrate everyone, from everywhere. Our community shares a passion for football and a purpose rooted in unity through diversity. The beautiful game brings us together.”

— Ralph Trionfo, Founder of Copa Love
